NW Open July 2021

This was the first show to be held by the Club since the start of the Corona Virus pandemic and to comply with social distancing measures advised by the Government and the Kennel Club the show was arranged at an outdoor venue – Thompson House Equestrian Centre at Standish.

This show was held in conjunction with the NW Championship show at the same venue. This arrangement was not our first choice and certainly not for convenience, nor was it an experiment. Lets just say it was a culmination of circumstances.

One advantage of this arrangement was that our judge for this show, Committee member Vicki Butler (right) could expect a larger than normal entry and so it turned out – 116 actual dogs.

Another significant benefit is the standard of the dogs as quite a lot had also entered the Champ show ie. 86 dogs were entered in both shows.

To avoid clashes with the Champ show judging at the Open show started early doors, 9.00 am, one and a half hours before the Ch show.

BIS prize

As this was the Club’s 75th Anniversary there were specials for the main winners and all class placing received a prize.

The prize for BIS was a Mansel Frayne original, opposite.

(NW members in red)

Firstly I would like to say what a honour it is that the NWSBTC invited me to judge their 75th anniversary open show at the new outdoor venue. The ring was a good size and I was ably assisted by my stewards Tec Norton and Andy Mayren who have my thanks on what was an extremely hot day.

Yes there were several delays in my judging day and to be quite honest I was glad of the respite from the sun. The dogs were very warm and I tried to keep them out of the sun for the shortest time. The quality of the exhibits was excellent and I would like to thank everyone who entered, there were some very close decisions where on another day places could be changed. Dentition overall was good with only a few misplaced canines here and there, fitness I felt was better in the bitches mostly.

Dogs

Minor Puppy Dog 8 entries

1st Best Puppy Dog and Best Puppy in Show Hammond’s Hammystaff Red Revenge, 8 months old beautiful deep red colour with white chest, cracking well defined head shape, lovely round dark eye and correct ears both of which added to his expression which is typical Stafford, straight front with good bone and enough brisket for his age, level topline which he held on the move, close coupled with good rear construction, he is fit and well muscled, correct tailset, once settled he moved with drive around the ring and watching him made me smile involuntarily.

2nd Couzens & Coombes’ – Niatona Arlo Coombes – Nearly 8 months red and white, nice head shape another who has lovely dark eyes, correct ears, his front is straight though narrower than 1st place at this stage, he is also slightly taller than 1st still balanced overall with a powerful rear end that drove him around the ring and he moved well holding his topline, I am sure as these dogs mature they may swap places several times, my notes say he was pipped at the post by 1st.

3rd Heron’s – Dilirystaff General

4th Playle’s Kalostaffs Warlord

5th Rutherford’s – Niatona All Above Board

Puppy Dog 8 entries

1st Waltham’s – Dringshaw Athos – Nearly 10 months old white and red, top sized and very eye catching my notes say. His head is well defined and strong with neat ears and dark eyes, good front with enough brisket, neat feet, body wise he is close coupled with well sprung ribs for this stage in his development, good topline, he moved well around the ring although he does make his handler work hard, correct tail carriage and well muscled hind quarters. I was hard pressed between him and minor puppy for best puppy in show, in the final line up the minor puppy moved slightly better but I was splitting hairs.

2nd Sutcliffe &Crossman’s – Pendlestaff Spitfire – 10 month old brindle dog who was shorter in height than 1st but still had strength and balance, he has a lovely head shape nice and clean, dark eye, ears ok not as neat as 1st place but still correct. He has a correct front and good feet, close coupled with a level topline that he held when moving, more to come from him as he matures I suspect.

3rd Davies’ – Fardeln Sean Flynn

4th Kenyon’s – Pendlestaff Hurricane

Junior Dog 5 Entries

1st Ianson’s – Cludenstaff I Will Follow, handled by Billy Young (incognito) – 15 months black brindle dog with white chest and foreleg. My notes say flashy and this dog is certainly that, he has a good head piece that houses correct dark eyes and neat ears, nice front stood square and enough brisket, he has a powerful frame and is shown in a fit condition, powerful rear quarters and correct tail he moved very well too , I considered him for top honours but I think he lost his spark in the final line up, probably due to the heat.

2nd Crawford’s – Dekayro Mystic Mac – 17 months black brindle with white chest. Similar dog to 1st place another with a good clean and strong head, dark eye and correct ears slightly less neat than 1st even though he is older in age than 1st place I felt that he is less mature in terms of body, its all there though and I am sure he will mature on, he moved very well and this was enough to score him 2nd over the other in the class.

3rd Courtney’s Valglo My Place Or Yours at Bullscaff

4th Fardeln Sean Flynn (3rd in Puppy class)

5th Tillcarr Forged In Fire

Novice Dog 6 Entries

1st Ovington’s – Diamondstaff Airdrie Pride – Black brindle top sized dog with nice head shape, correct ears and dark eye, he has a cracking front on him with a good brisket, neat feet, well sprung ribs, close coupled, strong rear and he moved with drive around the ring for his handler.

2nd Burrows & Ayrton’s – Rossobull Iggle Piggle – Brindle dog with white chest, I loved his colouring, good strong head, dark eye and good ears, correct front and on the day I just preferred 1st place, close coupled with good spring of rib, well muscled rear, he moved well holding his topline.

3rd Niatona Arlo Coombes (2nd in Minor Puppy class)

4th Fardeln Sean Flynn (3rd in Puppy class & 4th in Junior & Novice classes)

Post Graduate Dog 5 Entries

1st Hamilton & Murphy’s – Magicgem Daredevil For Shawrigg – Red dog that I have judged before, he full of Stafford character and certainly makes his handler work. He has a lovely clean well defined head with a nice dark eye and neat ears, correct front and his brisket has come on since I last judged him as a puppy. He is close coupled and fit as a fiddle, a good rear and he moved well once settled, another I considered for top honours

2nd Lewis’ – Hamason To Be Frank at Karjaydan – Another lovely red dog although more powerful than 1st place still well balanced, nice clean head, dark eye, correct ears, straight front with plenty of brisket, close coupled and fit, strong rear, moved well.

3rd Rossobull Iggle Piggle (2nd in Novice class)

4th Wise’s – Montgomery Guard

Limit Dog 18 Entries

1st, Best Dog & Best In Show, Gough’s – Manark Made To Measure – Red dog top sized who caught my eye straight away, he certainly has ring presence. He has an excellent head shape strong and clean with well pronounced cheeks, lovely dark round eye and correct neat ears that finish the overall expression that he has, my notes say “yummy” after my head description. His body does not disappoint either he has a cracking front, with ample bone and the slight turn out at the feet, a good brisket and well sprung rib lead to powerful hind quarters, he is rock solid in his muscles too. He moved around the ring with drive holding his topline. Although others pushed him in the final line up I couldn’t deny him top honours he really is lovely. BD and BIS.

2nd & Reserve Best Dog Robinson & Marsh’s – Hamason Finnbar Firecraker – Red and white pied dog, my notes say another cracker and he certainly was, stronger all over than 1st he has an excellent head, clean and strong with dark eyes and correct ears. Straight front with plenty of bone and a deep brisket, neat feet stood fore square, good spring of rib also shown in fit condition, strong rear quarters that drove him around the ring, held his topline on the move. I did really struggle with my places in this class and both dogs are excellent examples of the breed, credit must go to the owners for their fitness. I split hairs in the end, when he came back in to challenge for RBD I couldn’t deny him. RBD
