NW Champ Show July 2021

How on earth did we arrive here at this outdoor space at Wigan and indeed. ending up with two shows at once – the 75th Anniversary Champ show originally scheduled for April 2021 at Leigh Sports Village and the 75th Anniversary Open Show down for January 2021, one of two Open shows, the other originally destined to be held in October, at Leigh Mather Room.

The answer is Corona Virus and the unprecedented times (to quote the politicians) we all find ourselves in. Without going into detail it took a lot of manoeuvreing of dates, visiting potential venues, liaising with the KC, etc. The other big decision to take was to hold the show outdoors.

Our usual venue – at Leigh Sports Village was unavailable (vaccination centre) and other in-door venues around the county were closed for large gatherings.

So we ended up at Thompson House Equestrian Centre – a very large field with ample parking adjacent. No facilities on the field, except water; a cafe and toilets available within the Centre, although a bit of a trek from the field.

An ad hoc Committee meeting was held in Archie Bryden ‘s back garden and the plans were realised and the big decision made to hold the Champ and Open shows simultaneously at this new venue, employing three rings.

And so a valiant number of us arrived on site the night before to set up – the erection of seven Gazebo’s , three of which were on loan from East Anglia (thank you very much, Lesley MacFadyen). Extra large rings, taped areas, bunting, new award chalk boards (magnificent job, Paul Sutcliffe).

The social distancing aspect of these early shows in mid 2021 has sprouted the use of gazebos, tents, large umbrellas etc looking a bit like Glastonbury, well perhaps not.

Elaine and Tec Norton (the author of this report) stayed overnight on site and the above photo at the head of this page was taken at sunrise over Winter Hill on show day, the show area shrouded in mist – rather ethereal. This was a prelude to what was to come weather-wise – a sweltering hot day, not good for showing dogs but most people came prepared and the assortment of tents provided cover for most.

Gazebos in the rings to accommodate the judges and the stewards (in case it rained!) proved a godsend as the judges were able to go over the dogs in the shade so provided.

Many thanks goes to Jan Wilson and Bev Harrison for helping out on the photography front – Jan in the bitch ring and Bev in the dog ring.

I don’t want to dwell too much on the Covid measures at this event, safe to say that everyone’s behaviour was exemplary showing much patience with what we put in force.

And so to the show itself.

The Dog judge for this show was Harry Carter – Harry, along with Gill, owns the Seastaff affix – this appointment was his 6th.

Harry is a local lad, ailing from Salford. They retired to the Welsh riviera some years ago – well Prestatyn anyway.

The referee at this event was Kay Aspin, a very experienced judge – and she was needed at the end of proceedings for both BIS and Reserve Best in show.

This event was an opportune time to make a couple of presentations.

In the first instance 2021 is the 60th Anniversary of Norman & Dorothy Berry first joining the North West – their story is re-counted in Norman’s book – see Home page. This photo was taken at the ringside on the day.

Engraved glassware was presented to Kay Aspin in recognition of her 12 year stint as Club President.

Karon Jackson was the Bitch judge at this show, her 8th time awarding CC’s.

Along with husband Wayne they are enjoying some recent serious success in the show ring with their home bred stock under the Jackabyte affix after many years campaigning a number of dogs including three champions.

This being the 75th Anniversary of the Club’s existence there was a vast array of prizes not just for the main winners but for all class placings.

The Mansel Frayne artwork (left) presented to the BIS winner was originally purchased by the Club as an annual trophy – The Harry Latham award for the breeder accumulating the most points at the three Club shows each year. So we put it to good use after many years stored at Steve & Julie Simpson’s the last winner more than 10 years ago.

Despite the extreme heat (I kid you not) the show admin were able to keep cool under the gazebos

Main Winners

BIS and Dog CC – Hamason Fynnbar Firecraker, owned by NW members David Robinson and Jaki Marsh.

Pictured here with the judge is the dog’s handler on the day Cameron Booth; Jaki Marsh and Spencer Cox.

This dog was bred by the Robinson-Cox combo – Clare, Spencer, Harry and Maureen (all NW members) and you have to go back to the mid 80’s to find the last time that this kennel won a CC. (There was a prolonged sabbatical until the younger end took up the Hamason reins). Cameron only handled the dog in the class (Limit) as Spencer was otherwise engaged in the Bitch ring. Later on, he was sent in for the challenge and what a response from the ringside when the dog took the CC – Cameron looked slightly bewildered and in shock – that’s what makes this dog showing malarkey so appealing.

The Bitch CC and Best Puppy went to John & Sam Parker’s Elitebull Majito at Nettleworth, from the Puppy class.

The Parkers have enjoyed a spectacular run with this bitch, winning every class that she’s been entered in at the five Champ shows so far, that’s 12 classes – remarkable. The breeder, of course is NW member Debbie Desmond.

The Reserve BIS was the Dog RCC winner Cludenstaff I Will Follow from the Junior class, owned by the Iansons and handled by non other than Billy Young, looking totally un-recognisable behind dark glasses and wearing a tache. This dog also won the Junior class in the Open show.

The Bitch RCC went to a relative newcomer Catrin John and her home bred Llanstaff Double Valentine (by Ch Eclypstaff Cuz I Can, still firing)

Best Veteran was the unstoppable Ch Bullhawk Jessie Jay at Northstaff, owned by NW members Steve and Kelly Wilson (this bitch also went Best Veteran at the Open show).

Dogs

I would like to thank the Committee & members for inviting myself to judge the 75th Anniversary Championship show which I enjoyed judging & the Exhibitors for entering their dogs. I would also like to thank Roy Day my Steward for the day who kept the ring going like clockwork. Most of the dogs suffered with the heat as it was 35c so I forgave some of the movement on the day, I thought fitness was very poor, I found one short sternum

Bitches

What a day it was! My thanks to the Officers and Committee of the North West SBTC for the invitation to Judge their Anniversary show and for putting on a fantastic day – brilliant atmosphere and very well organised too. The weather was very hot and sunny all day and it did have an effect on some exhibits as they were drained by the sheer heat but owners did their very best and kept them in cool coats etc and I also offered them the choice to leave the ring out of the sun. There were a few delays inbetween some classes due to clashing with the open show, which was unavoidable. The overall quality of what I examined was very good, I Judged them on the day as they stood and performed before me and I know it’s a well used phrase but placings could change on any given day and I’m sure some will. There is a lot of top notch bitches coming through in the younger classes and it is heartening to see that the breed has a good future. In my opinion Covid lockdown certainly hasn’t affected the behaviour of these canine ladies, they were all impeccable and have been trained well during their home schooling with admirable temperaments too. Most seemed to be in good condition although there were a few with quite dirty teeth. Bites were good on the whole with just the odd misplaced tooth; I did not see any major faults. Most were good movers, however some did move in very close at the rear and lacked drive. Thank you for accepting and being sportsmanlike in applauding my decisions; Stafford people really are the best at supporting each other and being happy for someone else. Thank you to my superb ring stewards Elaine Norton and Jan Matthews – you did a brilliant job and in the heat of the day you never dropped a beat!
