Autumn 2019

In the show calendar, Autumn starts on the 1st of September and the first show is Richmond – the judge this year was Caroline Dewar (affix Euphemia).

And what a start to the season than another double for the Tillcarrs – both CC’s, Martin & Karen must be in dreamland – but it’s real, it’s happening.

The illustrious duo Ch Tillcarr Fire Coanda and Ch Tillcarr Baptism of Fire both won their 5th CC (in 2019) at this show, the latter now  has 10 CC’s!

So here they are

NW members were a bit thin on the ground, in fact the entry wasn’t exactly spectacular – 61 and only 23 (male) Dogs.

Liz Stanway was  one of the few to make the trip confining her entry to both Open Classes with Mosstrooper Kentucky Moon and her recently crowned bitch Ch Stormfire Crack The Code at Waystaff but nothing doing here – both placed 4th.

In the bitches at least we had some representation – the Jackson’s Jackabyte Bocouture was second in Junior and Gem Rowe’s Illori Bootie Luv now finally in Limit was also placed second. Bizarrely this bitch was also entered in the Open class (it was explained to me later by Gem that she was attempting to get a Stud Book number – only 1st places in Limit qualify, whereas it’s still the first three places in Open) and had to move down one, making way for Jackabyte Miss Moneypenny.

And that was it, except of course for the main winners.

The next event is usually the Northern Triple – but with Northern Counties suffering on rotation we were left with a double, Darlington followed by the North Eastern club show.

The judge at Darlington was Dean Cund – affix Chelmstaff and at the North East we had Veronica Brown (Rotherstaff) judging the Dogs and Gillian McDermott (Macadermus), the bitches.

The usual suspects were back in action at one or other or both of these two shows – the Elitebull clan were more or less intact and at Darlington Ch Elitebulls Challenger was on good form winning the Open class going on to take the RCC.

Litter brothers Elitebulls Charger (Debbie D) & Avenger (Debbie Mc-T) came second and third in the Puppy dog class, repeating this feat the next day, pictured below.

Dean’s winner in Junior Dog was Hatson Come On Thunder (pictured below) – certainly put a smile on owner/breeder Michaela Riley face.

Later Michaela’s bitch Molru Shine Ya Light came a very respectable second in Limit Bitch.

Taraiel Soulja Boy (below) has been hiding in the Graduate Dog class for so long he has won his way out; it’s now Post Graduate for him.

So what happens – he only wins the class at Darlington for owner/breeders Julie Bibby and Stacey Hirst.

The next class (at Darlington) – Limit Dog – was a third win at this level for Anne Preston’s Tillcarr Fire Starter (pictured below) putting his top winning siblings into the shade for a change – they were both placed down the line at this show.

As Martin Johnson put it “another double for us – VHC”.

Ch Taraiel Ciara also completed the double at these two shows winning the Veteran Bitch class at both shows and Best Veteran at Darlington

Not a bad day for Julie & Stacey then, as the Dog CC went to Ch Taraiel Reaper at Teracota to add to brother Soulja Boy and Ciara’s wins.

The bitch classes (at Darlington) weren’t exactly over-populated  by NW members but Karen Waltham’s American job Shortyrocks Faith Trust And Pixie Dust  (I still have to check whether I’ve got the order right) won the Junior class and the next day completed the double by winning the Junior class again at the NE.

Karen tells me that she didn’t know what to expect before this bitch arrived from the US – I guess she’s struck lucky with this one, photo below.

Another exhibitor who frequents the Graduate class is Linda Hall and once again came in with a First for her bitch Legendstaff Sweet Lady cum Geordiestaff at Darlington and a second at the NE, here she is, below, looking quite mature.

Just finishing off this weekend at the North East show – team Tillcarr, well the first team, made a rapid comeback (in the Dogs anyway) as Ch Tillcarr Fire Coanda won his fifth CC as normal service was resumed.

The NW also had a member winning Limit Dog at the North East, no not Tillcarr Fire Starter this time – it was Debbie McCarron-Tuer’s turn with Elitebull Supermoon – these two dogs don’t fare  at all badly, quietly winning here and there at this level including a RCC each – exciting times for the owners.

Pictured here is Supermoon

Moving on to the bitches at the North East and another win in the Puppy class for Ray & Jan Wilson’s Elitebull Elysian Dream, finishing with Best Puppy bitch.

Coming second in this class was the Stanway’s Waystaff Full Moon (below) after a third place in Minor Puppy – chasing points for this and that.

Moving up the classes to Limit Bitch and a first First in Limit for Gem Rowe’s Illori Bootie Luv (I think) having won herself out of Post Grad – then Gem repeated her act from Richmond by entering the Open class and nil points!

Anyway, this is her on the day.

Liz Stanway could be seen in the Open bitch class with her Ch Stormfire Crack The Code at Waystaff in second place behind the CC winner and in fourth was Ch Tillcarr Baptism Of Fire, having to watch brother winning the Dog CC.

The Veteran Bitch winner has already been mentioned (Ciara) but in second place was Pendlestaff Brindle Babe at Tikkurilan seen here with owner/handler Elaine Norton, showing off her birthday present – a tattoo of Ch Tikkurilan Ticka Teboo (right arm).

So that draws the Northern Double to an end for another year.  Next year the Triple makes a comeback in a somewhat different form – Northern Counties is on the same day as Darlington, same venue in the style of Western Bath. The North East remains intact.

The judge at Driffield was Betty Smith (affix Cossacks) who has many past ties with the North West but for some reason is not a NW member despite the generous concessions given to NW members of a certain age – a member with 10 continuous years paid up membership shall enjoy free membership at aged 65. In addition any Member with 30 years membership shall enjoy free membership.

The entry at this show was 121, significantly up on recent years and going against the tide somewhat of declining entries.

The main headline here is that Jackabyte Miss Moneypenny was awarded her third CC and a terrific result for owner/breeders Wayne & Karon Jackson – this is their first home bred Champion (although they have owned three other Champions, including the dam of this latest one).

Here we have Karon with Pennypops and Betty taking a well earned rest after a long day’s judging.

That was it for NW Members as far as the main awards was concerned – even Ch Taraiel Ciara had to concede the Best Veteran award to a very youthful dog (Ch Rubericla Black Starscream).

However there were a couple of triumphs in the Dogs starting with a First prize in the Puppy class for Debbie McCarron-Tuer and her younger Elitebull – Elitebull Avenger – he started his Puppy career by winning the class (at National Terrier) and finishes his puppy career at this show on a high with a lot of placings in between – this is him, below.

Whilst up in Limit Dog, finally a First place for the Axe’s Harley’s Choice (pictured below, thanks to Brian Owen for photo) – Limit has been a bit a hit and miss affair for this dog although there has been a number of placings including a few seconds.

Don’t forget though that this dog has a CC and a RCC to his name.

Back to Yearling Dog – in third place amongst some very respectable company was the Tighe’s Tegumen Ace Of Spades – he seems to pop up every now and then, much to the owners Stephen and Pat’s pleasure.

And in Post Graduate Dog and also standing in third place was Geoff & Eleanor Boote’s Belnite Balor at Gelstaff.

A bit of an off day for Team Tillcarr, but even on that off day Ch Tillcarr Fire Coanda still managed a second place to the ultimate CC winner.

In the bitches, except for the CC and Veteran winners First places eluded everybody else – a few second places worthy of a mention though; for the Stanway’s in Minor Puppy with Waystaff Full Moon (then going third in the Puppy class); in Junior was the Jackson’s Jackabyte Bocouture and then in Yearling we had Lisa Drummond and Ballindona Shooting Star at Fellknott.

This show held the following day after Driffield was an Open Show as the Club was without a Champ show in 2019 as part of the rotation of CC’s.

The Club decided to go back to the outstanding venue at Thorpe Willoughby for the show and the judge was NW Committee member Andy Mayren affix Fergiestaffs.

In the interval the Club had arranged Special Awards Classes (x3) and the judge for that was Chris Mudd, also a NW member.

Not an unreasonable entry of 50 dogs – the Junior Dog class would grace a Champ show these days.

Apologies in advance for the (relatively) poor quality of the class photos – taken on the phone.

We arrived just in time to see the line up for the Junior Dog class – in second place was Michaela Riley with her Hatson Come On Thunder and in third Jessie Farrimond with Ashstaff Jesse’s Dark Prince.

Liz Stanway had come mob handed with a fair old posse of dogs – the first in being Waystaff Strike Force getting a second place in Post Grad Dog.

And Harley’s Choice won the Limit Dog class, repeating his feat at Driffield, so not a bad weekend for the Axe family.

It was round about this time when we heard a sharp ripping sound from somewhere in the ring – it turned out to be Andy’s trousers!

He carried on valiantly until the interval.

Judge Andy Mayren

Liz made another appearance in the Open class and won it with Aust Ch Mosstrooper Kentucky Moon.

And in second place was Jane Roper with Trawden Ice Cool

After the dog judging Andy retired for trouser repairs and Chris Mudd entered the ring to judge the Special Award classes.

Chris had a good chunk of the dogs that were entered in the main show – 30 dogs to go over, providing valuable experience for him and justifying holding these classes.

The Special Award Post Graduate Dog/Bitch class was won by Hatson Come On Thunder handled here by owner/breeder Michaela Riley

Sp awards PG 1st Hatson Come On Thunder

And the Special Award Dog/Bitch Open class was won by Trawden Ice Cool, handled by Jane Roper.

Back to the main event, judging the Bitches with Andy Mayren, now fully trousered.

For me the joy experienced by handlers/owners/breeders when they win at whatever level is a joy to behold and this was typified at this show when Dawn Holmes won the Minor Puppy Bitch class with her Barielle Winters Solstice, below.

Michaela Riley made another appearance – this time in Junior bitch –  she was handling the litter sister to her dog (see Junior dog above) – this one also in second place and she’s called Hatson Getting Away With It.

5. JB 2nd Hatson Getting Away with It

The winner of this class was also entered in Post Grad bitch and she won that class as well and ended up as the Reserve Best Bitch; the identity of this bitch –  she was Karen Waltham’s Shortyrocks Faith Trust and Pixie Dust, pictured here winning the PG class.

Once again Michaela Riley came second in this Post Grad class, this time with another dog – Molru Shine Ya Light  – I think she’s been watching Gem Rowe with her various charges, or was it Liz?

The Open Bitch class winner was Chris Mudd, judge turned exhibitor with his Chiswelstaff Jean Genie

And in second place, no not Michaela, it was Elaine Norton and Tikkurilan Spot On

Finally just another pic of Barielle Winters Solstice, Best Puppy bitch and her very proud Mum, Dawn..

This is the Belfast Championship Show; judge this year all-rounder  Bill Brown-Cole.

This show never attracts a large entry for Staffords but this was a new low in recent times – only 27.

No disrespect to the eventual winners though – the standard of the dogs entered measures up to other events held across the water, just less of them.

Not many NW members travelled over from the UK mainland – one in fact – the Axe’s with Harley’s Choice coming fourth in the Open Dog class behind two prominent UK Champions.

There was one NW member who did especially well, winning the Bitch CC and BOB, and that was Martin & Michelle Murphy’s Ch Karwillage Mystic Girl (pictured below with Michelle and daughter Shauna), now fully released from maternal affairs.

Again the quality was apparent in this class, she leads the line-up of prominent bitches from Ireland.

Best Bitch & RBIS at this show was Michaela Riley’s Molru Shine Ya Light

The Reserve Best Dog was Liz Stanway’s Mosstrooper Kentucky Moon

The Best Puppy was another from the Waystaff ensemble – Waystaff Full Moon

The International Stafford Match

Oct 6th 2019

This is an annual event held in the Netherlands at this time of year with a number of Countries throughout Europe represented – this year there were 10 countries taking part.

Each team has eight dogs  – four of each sex with two dogs over 2 year old and two under 2 year old.

Three judges – Eric Galvin, Fiona McBride and Dagma Brommont-Lothary – each one goes over all the dogs, places them and awards points (0-10)

The team taking part in this year’s match

The ultimate winner was the UK and our team was dominated by dogs owned by NW members – Six in fact!

In the First Class, Debbie McCarron-Tuer’s Elitebull Avenger came in third with the other dog – Manark Made To Measure in second, but the combined score gave the UK the top score.

The next Class and it was the turn of the Bitches – Top of the tree was Ray Wilson with Elitebull Elysian Dream at Kalverin and just behind in second was Karon Jackson with Jackabyte Bocouture and another First for the UK (and the NW in this case).

Class 3 and Dogs over 2 years – Debbie Desmond’s Ch Elitebulls Challenger was in First spot for this one with Martin & Karen Johnson’s Ch Tillcarr Fire Coanda in third, the combined score giving the UK the lead in this class.

(at the time of doing this I have no photo of Coanda)

The fourth class – Bitches over two years – wasn’t quite as spectacular – with the last NW member – Ch Tillcarr Baptism Of Fire coming in third place (with the other team member Ch Nerotoro Stella in fifth) but the combined score put the UK in second.

So what a day for the UK and what a day for North West members and their winning dogs –  here they all are with the team Managers Pete Hopgood and Shaun Stone.

The points table at the end of the match

Congratulations to all the UK team especially the North West members – Martin & Karen Johnson, Ray & Jan Wilson, Debbie Desmond, Debbie McCarron-Tuer and Wayne & Karon Jackson.

The only downer was that I wasn’t there – they all look to be having a fantastic time!!

If you are looking for the North West Open show then go to:-

https://northwestsbtc.co.uk/nw-open-oct-2019-2/

This Potteries Open show was held on the 21st October 2019 at a new venue – the quaintly named Wetley Rocks Village Hall. A typical village hall providing not a lot of room but bags of atmosphere for judge Debbie Desmond (affix Elitebull) on her first Breed Club judging appointment.

Debbie has proved to be a very popular member of the Stafford community, reflected in a terrific entry, despite the absence (as she put it) of any Elitebulls.

This was a very enjoyable show with all the stops pulled out by the Committee and other volunteers – the only downside – no oatcakes!  Sheila promised the return of oatcakes for the 2020 Limit show.

The Best Bitch and Reserve BIS went to NW members Wayne & Karon Jackson’s Jackabyte Bocouture from the Junior Bitch class – the Jackson’s are on a bit of a roll at the moment, what with this bitch currently in top spot for the Top Puppy 2019 and her older half sister getting made up recently – Ch Jackabyte Miss Moneypenny.

Reserve Best Bitch went to another NW member – David & Julie Cartwright’s Zakstaff Winterfell from the Open Bitch class – this bitch has recently had puppies and I believe it was the first time out (or second).

Second place in the Open bitch class went to the Norton’s Eclypstaff C’Est La Vie at Tikkurilan, having a day out after a few years absence, getting in some practice in readiness for the upcoming Veteran classes in 2020.

The Open Dog class was won by Anne Preston’s Tillcarr Fire Starter who went on to be awarded the Reserve Best Dog.

Not a bad weekend for Anne, this dog won Best of Breed the previous day under Dave McKimm at Birmingham Gundog and Terrier, topped off with Terrier Group 4 placing.

The judge at this show was David Wedgwood, from the Potteries.

The show is held at the Stafford Showground and the Stafford ring was in the Margaret Everton Pavilion (on the edge of the showground) in splendid isolation, away from the main show itself.

If you know where it is, parking was very conveniently just outside this building.

On to the show – this was Liz Stanway’s day – another good day at the office – with a fourth CC for her (& Paul’s) bitch Ch Stormfire Crack the Code at Waystaff.

Liz also won the Puppy Bitch class with one of her own breeding – Waystaff Full Moon – this bitch is all Mosstrooper though, by Australian Ch Mosstrooper Kentucky Moon and out of Ch Mosstrooper Making Mischief at Waystaff, both these Aussies are owned by the Stanways.

Second place in the Limit Dog class went to Glyn Major’s Maxsta Floyd Lord Of The Went, making a welcome return to the top placings – I think the flash on the camera made him blink for this shot.

On to the Open Dog class  and in first position was Ch Elitebulls Challenger, not immediately obvious to me as Karon Jackson was handling – it turns out that Debbie Desmond was house bound with an expectant bitch about to give birth.

Second in this class was the aforementioned Mosstrooper Kentucky Moon

Just going back a bit I have to mention Derek Shaw, not many will know Derek unless you’ve been to the NW training class this year – Derek’s dog Gee Ebony Boy Blue (he’s more ebony than blue) was placed third in the Yearling dog class out six in the class. I missed this altogether, so no photo, sorry.

The Limit Bitch class was another win for Gem Rowe’s Illori Bootie Luv, maintaining her winning record.

And in the Open bitch class Liz with her Lesa (Stormfire Champ).

Third in this class was Briganah Body And Soul, handled here by Julie Simpson.

This show was on a Thursday, before a southern double header at the weekend at Watford and the Downlands and Southern Counties Club Champ shows.

The judges at these two shows – at the Downlands we had Joe Samby judging Dogs and Fred Jones the bitches, followed at the Southern Counties with Nigel Merrick judging the Dogs and Dave Manito the bitches.

Not many NW members made the trip but two in particular did very well.

It was a bit of a warm up for Andy & Linzi’s Bellarouge Adonis at Fergiestaffs on the first day being placed fifth in the Open Dog class behind Ch Elitebulls Challenger in third and Ch Tillcarr Fire Coanda in fourth, because on the 2nd day he was placed a bit further up the order to First.

What followed you can only dream about – well dreams come true for these owners and this dog (sitting on 2 CC’s prior to this show).

A third CC and then Best In Show (beating a bitch that has won 4 CC’s in 4 shows – Ch Frisian Staff’s It’s A Gift) – what a day.

Ch Elitebulls Challenger completed a double over the weekend, another third place in Open dog.

The other top performer is one of our overseas members – from Ireland actually – Martin & Michelle Murphy bred a litter this year and they had entered both these two shows with their bitch Brockmar Rewrite The Stars. Well what a start to her show career here in the UK winning the Minor Puppy bitch classes at both shows and, even better going, on to win Best Puppy (also at both shows), amazing.

The handler was the third member of the squad, daughter Shauna

Incidentally a litter brother to this bitch won the Minor Puppy dog class a couple of days ago at the Midland Counties and for people interested in pedigrees – the dam is the Murphy’s own Ch Karwillage Mystic Girl and the sire is that prolific sire of top winners Ch Eclypstaff Cuz I Can, not a bad choice, guys.

After a drab day at Downlands for Liz Stanway things improved on the Sunday with two seconds for her charges – Mosstrooper Kentucky Moon in Open Dog (and second to the CC winner, above) and Waystaff Full Moon in the Puppy bitch class.

The East Midlands were on “Rotation” this year (no Champ Show) and arranged an Open Show around a number of other breed related events – Puppy of the Year and Veteran of the Year  and a Breed Specific seminar – all these going on in the KC building at Stoneleigh.

This overall innovative event created a super entry of over 100 dogs!

The judge for the show was Miguel Navarro (from Spain) who awarded Best In Show to Gem Rowe’s Illori Boote Luv – a very consistent winner throughout the year at all shows.

John and Chris Howard attended this show with their new Home Bred puppy – Matrixstaff Black Beauty – and won the Minor Puppy bitch class and went on to win Best Puppy bitch – a great thrill for these two and here she is below.

The Veteran of the year under judge Barbara Beaufoy went deservedly so to the Top Veteran – Julie Bibby & Stacey Hirst’s Ch Taraiel Ciara, pictured below.

A great show this, at Whiston Town Hall – judge Julie Gray (affix Aberstaff) attracting an entry of 60 dogs. Many thanks to Julie for coming loaded with Specials for the main winners – carrier bags full of goodies for the dogs and humans alike – and a small bag of stuff for all the First Prize class winners – very generous, Julie.

On the down side the good entry was marred a bit by the absence of some of the dogs due to Kennel Cough with responsible owners leaving afflicted  dogs at home.

Best In Show was the recently crowned Ch Bellarouge Adonis at Fergiestaff – it’s certainly been a hectic couple of weeks for owners Andy & Linzi Mayren what with the excitement of making the dog up, followed closely by whelping a litter (out of Joemikeste Queen O The Nile at Fergiestaffs) and then the BIS at this show.

This was from the Open class – the second placed was Liz Stanway and her Australian Champion Mosstrooper Kentucky Moon

Liz also got a second place in the Post Graduate Dog class with Waystaff Strike Force, Michaela Riley handling.

That was the only success with the Dogs for NW members, except for Debbie McCarron- Tuer and her young dog Elitebull Avenger – having been placed down the line in Junior (4th) she popped up in Yearling, moving up one place to 3rd, and won the Maiden & Novice classes.

NW members featured more in the bitch classes at this show – starting off with the winner of Minor Puppy – John & Chris Howard’s very promising puppy Matrixstaffs Black Beauty.

Litter sister, Matrixstaffs Black Velvet, owned by Derek Shaw was placed third in this class.

In the Junior bitch class the winner was Liz Stanway and Waystaff Honeymoon

Second in this class was Paul Sutcliffe & Claire Crossman’s Pendlestaff Black Coral.

The Post Graduate bitch class First place went to Linda Hall’s Geordiestaff Luv Bobby Dog

And the Limit bitch class was won by the Norton’s Tikkurilan Spot On, handled by Michaela Riley.

And another NW member won the Open Bitch class – Janet Matthews with her Janjoma Boniwee Gurl, followed in second place by the Nortons again with Eclypstaff C’est La Vie

The last class of the day was the Veteran bitch – won here by Pendlestaff Brindle Babe of Tikkurilan – she went on to win the Best Veteran in show.

Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club Of South Wales Ch Show

Not many North Westers ventured down to South Wales – one or two that did were on the younger end, with the Murphy family over from Dublin with two puppies winning Puppy classes – Brockmar Crack On winning Puppy Dog and Brockmar Rewrite the Stars winning the Minor Puppy Bitch class and going on to win Best Puppy in show, the third such win on the bounce – the others at the Southern Double in October.

Pictured here is Rewrite The Stars with Shauna Murphy handling and the Judge Mel Corcoran, adjudicating at her first UK Champ show.

The Minor Puppy bitch class was where most of the other NW members were to be found – in second place was the Howard’s Matrixstaffs Black Beauty (see photo above at the Merseyside show); fourth in this class was Dawn Holmes’ Barielle Winters Solstice and Derek Shaw made the trip with his Matrixstaffs bitch, sadly unplaced.

There is one NW member that did very well and that was the much travelled Gem Rowe signing out for the year by winning the Limit bitch class with her Illori Bootie Luv, followed by the RCC.

Well done to her, not a bad 2019 I’d say.

Notts & Derby Open Show – Dec 2019

Best In Show under judge Jen Johnson was NW members Bryn & Julie Allsopp with their dog Ch Rubericla Trailbreaker

Autumn ends here
