The North West Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club’s aim is to promote in a positive way the breeding and showing of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier to the Breed Standard as set out by The Kennel Club and to educate it’s members in the training, breeding, showing (including judging) and all aspects related to the owning of a Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

The Club holds three shows every year starting with the Open Show in January. The beginning of April sees the big event of the calendar, the Championship Show where Challenge Certificates are awarded to the top winning Dog and Bitch. Finally in October we hold a second Open Show.

The Club runs a handling/training class principally to introduce and educate people who are new to the Breed in the ways of the show scene, how to enter and show your dog and train your puppy in how to get the best out of him/her. More experienced members and Stafford owners bring their latest puppies to the classes to help socialise them and teach them how to behave in a “show” environment. The Training Class is usually held at least once a month (sometimes twice) on a midweek evening.

The Club’s AGM is held in January where Officers and Committee are elected, the accounts for the previous year are presented, Judges are selected for forthcoming shows and any proposals on the agenda are discussed.

The Club organises educational events and seminars in line with the Kennel Club requirements for Judges, although these are of general interest to everybody in the Breed.

Finally the Club occasionally arranges social events including fund raising such as sponsored walks for Stafford Rescue schemes.

To be held on the 7th April 2024 at Leigh Leisure Centre, Leigh Sports Village, WN7 4JY

Please note that we have a change of Dog judge – Eddie Williams has had to withdraw due to health issues. Michelle Murphy has kindly agreed to step in.

Dog Judge – Michelle Murphy (Brockmar)

I have been actively involved in Staffordshire Bull Terriers for the past 20 years. I share the Brockmar affix with my husband Martin.
I am currently Treasurer and Chairperson of the Irish Staffordshire Bull Terrier Association, a club that is very dear to my heart. I have
held many positions within the club for many years.
I also have judged championship shows in my home country of Ireland and also judged in Sweden, America, Australia and the UK.
I love to travel to the UK with my family to campaign our Staffords and have done so for many years.

MICHELLE MURPHY

My most notable Stafford is UK/Ir Ch Karwillage Mystic Girl at Brockmar Jnr Ch/CJW 17, whom I campaigned to her titles and BOB at Crufts 2020. We have recently campaigned our homebred UK Ch Brockmar Rewrite The Stars and also Brockmar Crack On who has two CC and two RCCs.
I’m truly honoured to be judging for the North West SBTC and thank the committee for this invitation – a wonderful club I have travelled to many times to exhibit.
I know what it is like first hand as a exhibitor, the dedication, the miles and time put into getting your Staffords ready for shows. I will judge to my knowledge and interpretation of the Breed Standard, I have no colour preferences as I believe a good Stafford has no colour preference and look forward to my appointment

Bitch Judge – Roy Day (Bullred)

ROY DAY

My first Stafford was acquired in 1984 (Jenny’s Penni), then my second who we started to show with, was in 1988 (Kazemick
Kop King).
My first judging appointment was in August 1992 at a general canine open show. My first CC appointment was in August 2012
at the Scottish Kennel Club.
To date I have also shown Kazemick Kop Queen, Madame Told Yer So, Waystaff Calamity Jane, Ch Stormpike Ebony And Ivory at Bullred, Briganah Black Caviar, Briganah Body And Soul and Belnite The Seer.

This North West championship show will be my sixth CC appointment in the UK. I will give my honest and unbiased opinion of the exhibits on the day. Lastly I would like to thank the North West SBT Club for giving me the honour of judging this show.

The 2024 AGM

Was held at the Over Hulton Conservative Club,

St Helens Rd, Over Hulton, Bolton BL5 1AA

on Sunday 28th January 2024 at 11.00 am

Thirty three members attended, somewhat up on previous recent years.

The Chairman, Roy Day opened proceedings, last years minutes were approved and the accounts for 2023 were presented by the Treasurer Tec Norton – he reported a small loss for the year – a year in which the Club did not hold a Championship show – a victim of the KC’s policy of three clubs missing out every year, the so called rotation. However, from 2024 all the Clubs will be allocated CC’s, indefinitely. President, Archie Bryden proposed that the meeting approve the accounts – this was unanimous.

Election of Officers for 2024 – President – two names proposed – Archie Bryden and Geoff Boote. Archie withdrew leaving Geoff as the new President. Chairman – Roy Day; Secretary – Claire Crossman; Show Secretary – Vicki Butler; Treasurer – Tec Norton; and Membership Secretary – Dave Butler were all elected un-opposed. Andy Mayren and Paul Sutcliffe were both proposed for the Vice-Chairmen job, and Andy got the nod and finally Diane Courtney was elected as Publicity Officer.

The new committee are – Elaine Norton, Kay Aspin, Linzi Mayren, Kerry Couzens, Gill Beckwith, Eleanor Boote, Chris Howard, Dave Heyes, John Howard, Paul Sutcliffe – all re-elected. New committee members – Tom Lowe & Ann Preston.

Bev Harrison and Christine Wibberley both resigned.

Election of judges for the two Open Shows in 2025 – Jane Neale and Faye Gardner.

Election of judges for the 2026 Championship Show – Paul Sutcliffe and Wayne Jackson – Paul agreed to judge the Dogs.

More from the Kennel Club – the JEP.

JEP stands for Judges Education Program – the basis of which is to provide an educational framework for judges to progress to being approved to award CC’s and beyond, judging multiple breeds, Groups, etc.

This initiative has been going for a number of years in different guises running parallel with the existing traditional route (B list, A list etc) but we are assured that this will be fully implemented by January 2025 and the existing system will be defunct.

Obituary – Dorothy Berry

On 12th December Norman Berry announced to the world that his dear and wonderful wife Dorothy passed away the previous night; not much of a birthday present for Norman who had reached the grand old age of 91 only days before this tragic event. Dorothy herself was not far behind agewise, she had been suffering for sometime involving several hospital visits and this precluded her from attending the show scene over the last year or so. That said, they both came to the two NW Champ shows held at the Standish equestrian centre in 2021 and it was at the first one in July of that year that the Club made a presentation to Norman & Dorothy commemorating their 60 years Club membership. .

NORMAN & DOROTHY BERRY AT THE NWSBTC CHAMP SHOW JULY 2021

A previous milestone, in 1990, was the accolade of both Norman & Dorothy being elected as Life Vice Presidents of the North West in recognition of their involvement with the Club.

At a personal level Dorothy was one of the best; never a bad word for anyone or from anyone, extremely generous, always thinking of others and no matter what, she had this very cheerful disposition and positive outlook on life. There was one downside, she couldn’t make a decent cuppa, but we forgive her for that shortcoming!

The funeral was held on the 9th January 2024

The KC announced back in February 2022 that our breed moves back to Band E (the highest) – from Band D. Effective from January 2022.

This change was initially set for 2024, but was brought forward to 2022 and will be reviewed in 2026 (and every four years thereafter).

What this means is that dogs can qualify for entry into the Stud Book, down to third place in both the Open and Limit classes at Champ shows.

A reminder that the KC are to abandon the Rotation system but as far as we know this will only happen from 2024. Note – for SBT’s we currently have 14 sets of CC’s between 17 clubs, so three Clubs sit out each year without a Champ show, on a rotational basis). Despite clubs running two shows recently these extra shows are postponements during the Covid lockdowns that we have seen in 2020 and 2021.

Note – in June 2021 the KC confirmed that all Stafford clubs will enjoy CC’s every year, from 2024 to 2028, at which point the allocation will be reviewed.

The NW had CC’s in 2022 but the Club is on rotation in 2023! Rock on 2024.

Stafford Rescue

The North West wholeheartedly supports Rescue and we would like to bring to the attention of Club members the organisation in the UK as a whole – Staffordshire Bull Terrier Welfare.

This is a centrally based body that principally supports the various regional rescues in money raising schemes and provides a wider network of potential homes for the dogs

The rescue of Staffordshire Bull Terriers in this area – the North West – is down to Barbara Green, part of the national rescue organisation Stafford Welfare.

In addition there is a second rescue group – Northern SBT Rescue, based in Cumbria – under the auspices of Bob Whittall and Anna Murray

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier Welfare are also very concerned that Staffords are neutered when not required for breeding purposes (all rescues are neutered anyway) and will financially support any owner to achieve this if the latter is unable to do so themselves – see flyer right, right.
