NW Open Show April 2023

2nd April 2023

Judge – Isidoro Martinez (Bullbrothers)

This show was once again held at the Civic Hall, Longridge, now established as the NWSBTC Open show venue, the hall offering plenty of space and the same goes for the parking. The kitchen is fully kitted out with all the required facilities. However, all this comes at a cost premium over the previous venue, which the club is willing to accept on the basis that the standard of shows can be constantly improved in terms of what we offer the exhibitors and club members without increasing our prices.

Remarkably we have a Show management team these days involved in setting up the show – both the previous evening and early doors on the day. Here they are – jobs done and ready to go – Paul Sutcliffe, John Howard (who is also on the Kitchen team) and Andy Mayren.

As noted above the judge at this show was Isisdoro Martinez who along with his brother Jose campaigns their Staffords under the Bullbrothers affix. They hail from the Stoke area and are active on the Potteries committee – the photo on the right is of Isisdoro with his stewards – NWSBTC LVP Kay Aspin and new girl on the block Kerrie Couzens, apprentice steward.

We are quite willing to accept all the plaudits for the high standard of food – bacon balms, scones and hot pot in particular, representing excellent value for money. It is great to see people taking full advantage, as we can see in the photo below – don’t know who this strange woman is though.

One of the attractions of these Open shows is the catering, carried out by the ladies of the Committee – back in the day that’s how it was but in these enlightened times the kitchen squad is a male only preserve, for now anyway, lead by Head Chef Dave Heyes supported by Tec Norton (left) with John Howard on the counter.

On the gate – a real dynamic duo Elaine Norton and Chris Wibberley – these two not desperate to be photographed.

And all set to go – on the Top table are the show team Vicki & Dave Butler with Linzi Mayren – the happy bunch.

Having retired from their executive roles the Boote’s have taken on the Club shop – this is not new as they have both run the Crufts stall over recent years so this is just an extension – any way here they both are.

Before we move onto the show itself it was nice to see Julie Simpson on the day making a brave return to dog shows – I think that everyone was happy to see her once more – thanks going to Roy Day for enticing Julie out.

The show was opened as a joint effort by our long serving President Archie Bryden and our new Chairman Roy Day.

Judges Critique and photos of placings

I would like to say thank you to the committee and members for inviting me to judge the Open Show, it has been an honour for me. Thank you for looking after me and my lovely judge’s gift, to my ring stewards Kay Aspin and Kerrie Couzens for the running of the ring and to the exhibitors for your entries. I thoroughly enjoyed my day; the atmosphere was very good. Some decisions were very close, and I was very happy with the quality of the dogs.
