What a show to remember, the venue packed to the rafters, making for a great atmosphere.
A really good turn out for our Open show. Nice to see when all the talk recently has been about declining numbers, but not for this one. Thank you to all the Staffordshire Bull Terrier friends who made it the day it was. A healthy entry helped by the Judge on the day Jackie Smart who pulled in the exhibitors in numbers – 76 – and she didn’t disappoint demonstrating first class judging all day long. Well done to the committee for making the whole thing work and making everyone welcome, can’t wait till the next one.

Judge’s Critique and photos of winners
I would like to thank the North West committee for the appointment and all of the exhibitors for showing me and the club your support today. I had a thoroughly enjoyable day and hope you did too. The large ringside crowd made for a super atmosphere all day and the applause for the winners would make any judge smile.

1. LISTCALL TOWN CRYER. A standard sized stripey brindle, still very much a baby with plenty of growing to do. Possessing at this time a good shape to head which is well proportioned, and small neat ears which he used well. Straight limbs with enough bone. His body is compact and everything is fitting together nicely at this stage of his development. Moved well and with confidence.
2. WAYSTAFF WHAT A CRACKER. A brindle/white, who has a little more lift than the winner. He has a clean muzzle and a good bite. Ears a little big at this stage but hopefully he’ll grow into them. Nicely balanced having enough rib and depth of brisket. He is short coupled with a defined waist giving him a pleasing outline. Topline held on move.

1. GEORDIESTAFF DYNAMO DEXTER. This bl/br/wh lad had it all for me. He has a lovely head and expression which was enhanced by his neat rose ears. He has a good muzzle to skull ratio with enough stop without being too much. The head is un-exaggerated with a clean, blocky foreface and plenty of underjaw which housed his big white teeth. He is in super condition for one so young which is a credit to his owners. He has a straight, well boned front and the tightest of feet which were well padded. Compact body with enough depth to brisket and width to chest for age. Nice shape to rib, nice tuck up in loin and well bent stifles. Moved well holding his topline . I think this boy will have some good times ahead of him. No hesitation in giving him Best Dog. Later in the day Best In Show and Best Puppy In Show. Well done.
2. GEORDIESTAFF CANNIE LADDIE. Beaten by his litter brother. There’s a little more of him …bit more lift, slightly stronger head which is also of good proportions. He too had well boned legs and neat feet. He possesses a good topline and he is in fine fettle. Moves well in front but a smidge closer behind than winner. Another pup with a bright future. Will watch these twos progress.

1. ALBERMARBULL RED RIOT. A red dog I like a lot, stunning head piece with neat rose ears which he uses constantly. He has well placed dark eye and good strength of underjaw. He is compact with good rib and nice rear angulation. Good feet though you would prefer better pigmentation. Moves nicely behind.
2.ROWANSBLAC LUVLEY JUBBLY FOR BALLINDONA. Stocky black brindle, strong headed with blocky muzzle housing a good bite. He has neat feet, good width to front, well ribbed, coat gleaming. A right powerhouse in super condition. Moves better in front than behind. Just preferred the more balanced outline of 1.

1. ZOELLIES NORTHERN STAR FOR BALLINDONA. Standard sized red, another powerhouse from this kennel. He has a good mouth, distinct stop with enough strength of muzzle. The muzzle to skull ratio is good. He has plenty of rib, his front is straight, wide and well boned. Moved with purpose.
2. NOBLESTAFF VOO DOO STORM. Substantial, topsized black brindle. Strong headed which wasn’t as clean as winner. He has good dentition housed in his strong muzzle. He has substance in abundance, well boned legs, neatest of feet, deep brisket and good rear angulation. Held his topline better on the move than the winner. Would benefit from losing a bit of weight.

A well set eye and neat ear carriage which enhanced his expression. He has good weight of bone on his straight limbs. He has good forechest and rib tapering to a defined waist. Lost out to winner on rear angulation. Was a little erratic on the move to start with but once settled he moves effortlessly up and down the mat. Another in good nick. Unfortunate to meet the winner today. Reserve Best Dog.

1. Pitstar’s Brindle Bruiser. Compact, dark brindle with strong head. Neat rose ears with good eye placement, strong neck leading to well placed shoulders. Well boned straight front, tight feet and good width of forechest. He is well balanced with a good rib and depth of brisket. He has a level topline which he held at all times, which was one of my deciding factors to place him 1st. The other being the tad more lift which just balanced him out that bit better.

He has a dark eye and well placed rose ears. He has no weakness at the pasterns, straight front with good width to chest. He has a good shape to rib and enough depth to brisket. He has good pigmentation and is hard to the touch. Moved with ease down the mat.

1. LISTCALL UNCLE BUCK IN HARKLINE. Standard size bl/br, nice head shape with blunt muzzle housing correct bite. Small, neat ears and a dark eye all add to his pleasing expression. He is compact with a good ribcage on him which tapered to a defined waistline. He has firm rear quarters, a good bend of stifle and a well set tail. Moved OK. Preferred his size to the 2nd.
2. BULLHAWK CODE MASTER AT KALVERIN. Black brindle in gleaming condition. He is a topsize boy possessing good head properties, neat ear carriage and a good mouth. He has great pigmentation, having black nails on white feet. His front is straight and well boned. His rear is well muscled with a good bend of stifle. Would of preferred a tad more spring of rib.

1. CH HARKLINE ROBBIE THE BRUCE JW. Not a lot I can say about this old boy that hasn’t already been said. Not lost any of his ‘spark’ as was there for all to see… when he and his son eyeballed each other while collecting their cards!! Still possessing a well proportioned head for his 10yrs, good strength of muzzle though some of the contents are now missing!! Seemed to enjoy his day out as he marched up and down the floor.
2. BEAUSTAFF PADDY’S PAL. 7yr old son of the winner, one with something to say … to his fathers annoyance! Still in good fettle, nice head shape with good eye, neat feet, good rear quarters and a level topline. The winner just had a tad better front and a smidge more rib.

1. REVELRY SOUL DIVA. Gleaming black brindle pup in lovely condition for age. She has a chiselled head of good proportion, darkest of eye which is of good shape and size, rose ears which you would prefer a tad thinner. She has plenty of daylight underneath her at this stage of her development. Rib of good shape and depth leading to light loins. Straight front with neat feet and showing no weakness in pasterns. Nicely muscled hindquarters. She moved freely up the mat. Her expression put her at front of the class today.
2. WAYSTAFF LITTLE CRACKER. This flashy brindle/white pup is somewhat behind the winner in the development department, she is still very much a baby and has time on her side. She has the straightest of fronts on neat feet, good rib for age, short in back and coupling. Her head is clean with no excess flesh, her eye is dark and well placed. Her ears look a little big but hopefully as her head develops this will change. Moved OK and held her topline. Preferred the head and expression of 1.

1. I LUV STAFFIES VIVA LA DIVA. White with red eye patch. Not the biggest of girls this one. She has a good skull to muzzle ratio, good dentition and a dark eye. You would like a little more width of chest, the front is straight, feet are tight with enough padding though the nails could be shorter. She has enough rib, and good angulation behind. She holds a level topline on the move and carries her tail well. Best mover in the class.
2. BALLINDONA ENCHANTMENT. Dark brindle, stronger all round than 1. Strong muzzle with good mouth, eye well placed and distinct stop. I preferred the front on the winner though it is well boned and on neat feet. She has ample rib, good depth to brisket and is nicely tucked up in loin. She is short coupled with a good bend of stifle. Preferred the front and movement on 1.

1. FLINTSTAFF HELENA. Standard sized stripey brindle bitch. Loved the make and shape of this girl, she is a cobbier type of bitch without being OTT. She is so well proportioned in head and body, which at the death, was one of my deciding factors. She has a blocky head and muzzle with a underjaw to die for. Lovely neat rose ears sitting nicely on the head, short strong neck leading on to a compact body with a super ribcage. She has well boned legs on super well padded tight feet. She has a nicely angulated rear which is firm to the touch. Her coat is short and in gleaming condition. Moved Ok. On the move she tends to carry her tail a little higher than preferred. RBB
2. SEASTAFF POLAR FORCE AT JACKSTAFF. Topsize white with red patch. Good head shape with clean muzzle and neatest of ears. Straight front with good width to forechest, feet not as tight as 1. She is well ribbed with good depth to brisket. I felt the rear angulation was slightly better on the winner. She is a happy soul on the move but tends to look up at her handler which to make her ‘high step’ in front.

1. ECLYPSTAFF THERE YOU GO AT KALVERIN. Lovely feminine head on this black brindle, possessing the most gorgeous expression when she uses her well placed rose ears. The head has correct skull to muzzle ratio, it is clean with no excess flesh. The eye is dark and round set well in the skull. She has the neatest of feet on well boned legs, the front is straight though you’d like a tad more width of forechest. Handler tends to stand her front a little too far in front of her giving her the ‘rocking horse effect’…just a tip for future reference!! Stood up correctly she looks a picture. She possesses a level topline at all times, a good depth of brisket and a good bend of stifle. She has enough rib, is short coupled and in tremendous condition, for which the owner deserves a pat on the back. Moved well. She just had that little bit more pizzazz in the final line up to pip the junior winner to the top spot. Best Bitch. RBIS.
Winners of Yearling, Puppy and Minor Puppy classes in bitch lineup.
2. JAZZYGEM CHERRY RED ALBERMARBULL. Red/white bitch with a tad more substance than winner. Nice head shape, well boned front which is straight with no weakness in pasterns. Nicely ribbed and good depth of brisket. Well balanced with good bend of stifle, short coupled and tail carried correctly. She just wasn’t within touching distance of the winner in the fitness stakes which cost her today.

1. WILLOWSTAFF ARCADIAN ROSE. Standard sized, feminine black brindle, clean head and muzzle, straight front with adequate bone and neat feet. Compact in body and short coupled with good tuck up in loin. Lovely neat ears which enhance her expression when she decides to use them… just prefers to hide them away!! Nicely angulated behind, moved well .
2. NOBLESTAFF VOO DOO STAR. Stronger, standard black brindle girl who has similar qualities to winner. In fine fettle which was evident in her coat condition. She was a little straighter behind which caused her to lose her topline on the move. This was what swayed my decision in the winners favour.

2. FERGIESTAFFS MASKED GIRL. Flashy red/white which good head properties though not as tight lipped as winner. Eye could be darker but is in relation to coat colour. She has good width and depth of muzzle which housed good dentition. Strong boned, straight front and well padded feet. In super fit condition which should be applauded. She is a well balanced bitch with good spring of rib allowing plenty of room for those vital organs. She is short coupled with a good tuck up in loin. 1. HOWFENSTAFF PADDYS GIRL AT PALJAZ JW. Well ribbed black brindle lass, who is short coupled and in fine fettle. She possesses a well shaped feminine head of good proportions. Her ears only enhance her expression… unfortunately she’s a little reluctant to use them too often. Adequate bend to stifle, well toned 1st and 2nd thigh, level topline which she held on the move. To be hyper critical I’d prefer another inch on her leg to balance her out that bit more.
2. OZZIES RED RASCAL. Fawn who has more lift, less substance and head of the winner. She has a clean head which is in proportion, with a distinct stop and neat ears. She is in good nick, with a good straight front with enough width to forechest and depth to brisket. She has a good shape to rib leading to a light loin. Tended to hunch herself up a bit on the move putting her topline out.

1. PENDLESTAFF PADMES LASS. This is a strong dark brindle bitch who carries many virtues and a niggling fault. Being as I am judging on virtues, I put this hiccup to one side. She has a strong deep through head of good size and proportions, would prefer a smidge more width to muzzle/underjaw. Strong neck leading to good shoulder placement, straightest of fronts on solid tight feet. Super rib and enough depth to brisket, well tucked up in loin and nicely angulated rear. Tail set correctly and moved parallel up the mat holding her topline. Another bitch in good order.
2. RUSSTAFF LILIS LADY. Bl/br/ wh bitch who is daintier than winner in all departments. Decent head which is clean with neat ears, feet not as tight as 1 but she had a straight front with enough bone to match her stature. Enough rib and a good bend of stifle. Moved happily up the mat. Unfortunately she was fighting a uphill battle to compete with the winner in the fitness stakes. Hence her 2nd place.

1. TRAWDEN BLACK JET AT PALJAZ. Dark brindle who is clean headed with a blocky muzzle housing large teeth. Correct eye/ear placement, good front with correct bone to balance on neat feet. Just carrying a pound or two more than needed. Moved OK.
2. PENDLESTAFF BRINDLE BABE AT TIKKURILAN. No lack of substance here!! She is a strong bl/br with ample bone on good legs. 1. STORMPIKE CLEOPATRA OF TIKKURILAN. Standard bl/br who belies her years, but for a tinge of grey you wouldn’t believe she is 10. I was shocked when I opened her mouth and found a perfect set of gnashers…not a broken tooth in sight!! Lovely straight front on tight feet, clean well proportioned head with defined stop and well placed dark eye. Well ribbed and in good condition. Could still hold her own amongst the youngsters. One to be proud of.
2. TARAIEL QUEEN GALADRIEL. Lively 11 yr old who is again in good nick for her years. Not managed to keep hold of all her teeth like the winner has. She still has a glint in her eye if trouble decided to come her way though!!. Her front is good and she has good rib shape tapering to a defined waist. Didn’t move as positively as 1 today.
