The judge for our Open show, held on the 28th October 2018 was Brian Speed (Speediestaff) from Cumbria.
Proceedings commenced with a minutes silence remembering the passing of Club members Stan Atherton and Len Barton, RIP.
Stan was the other half of the Lancstaff kennel and husband to Carole, a former secretary of the North West. They bred two Champions – Ch Lancstaff Sparbu Saga and Ch Lancstaff Rosie Roras Red and in the same breath Lancstaff Kjells Namsos Noble, a well known stud dog.
Apart from the dog scene Stan’s other passion was fishing – he smoked his own fish and delicious they were too.
Len was a long standing NW member and enthusiastic supporter of the Training Class supplying a hand-made (by Len himself) collar and lead for the raffle, that’s not just a one time gesture it was every training class!
Len wasn’t a prolific breeder but I do recall his dog Bowbar Midnight Encounter doing some good winning.
Before the main business of the day Club Chairman Archie Bryden announced that the proceeds from the Sponsored walk, held in September 2018 for Stafford Rescue, amounted to the gargantuan sum of £2665.

As always these shows at Leigh are very well supported by spectators drawn from all over the NW area who are not necessarily involved in exhibiting but are obviously still very much interested in the breed – it’s certainly fills the hall and creates a terrific atmosphere and this show was no exception.
The show attracted an entry of 40, not bad these days and with only 7 dogs absent the Class numbers were enough to give Brian some actual judging to do.
Most exhibitors attending were relatively local drawn from the North West, Cumbria, Yorkshire and the Potteries areas and we did see some from further afield (from the Midlands) but I never expected to see someone from the Isle of Skye – a certain Miss Z Stephens – phew.
Thanks to all for helping to make this a super event.
Of course, it always helps if the refreshments are something to shout about and that was definitely the case here – I can vouch for the hot pot, yum.
Well done to Dave Heyes and Julie Simpson, assisted at the show by Steve Simpson and Denise Ramsden.
The Club would also like to thank NW member Julie Cartwright for standing in as a ring steward – it’s not as though the NW is short on that front but with all able stewards involved in various show duties and a couple of committee absentees it left us a bit short on the day.

Puppy Dog – 2 entries
1st Murray’s Cinfel Melodies Tailor, BPD & BPIS
9 Month red dog with a strong head neat ears dark eye and correct bite. Good muzzle to skull ratio with distinct stop and good expression. Strong neck good shoulder angulation. Good wide front with good depth of chest and enough rib for age. Lots of bone level top line and strong rear quarters with correct tail set. Moved well once settled. Happy to award him Best puppy dog and Best Puppy in show
2nd Blanch Calonge’s – Stormfire Sex Symbol
11 Mnth blk/wh pied. Another promising young dog with many of the qualities of 1 nice head dark eye and correct bite with good expression. Less bone than 1 nice front with good depth of chest and enough rib. Level top line. Well muscled shoulders and rear quarters. Good bend of stifle and correct tail set. Moved well
Junior Dog (5 entries, 1 absent)
1st Blanch Calonge’s Stormfire Lebron James
Another nice young dog. Red/white pied with a nice head shape distinct stop dark eye correct bite. Strong neck running into well angulated shoulders. Nice wide front deep chest and well sprung ribs. Level top line strong rear quarters. Shown in good fit condition moved well.
2nd Preston’s Tillcarr Fire Starter
Blk/br with a good head shape dark eye neat ears giving a typical expression. Well muscled shoulders wide front deep chest and well sprung ribs. Enough bone. Level top line . Strong rear quarters good bend of stifle. Moved ok.
3rd Tighes’s – Tegumen Ace Of Spades
4th Brannon’s Beckash Master Craftsman – the dog gave the handler a hard time making it impossible for the judge to assess him and indeed for a half decent photo of him – a trip to a handling class, maybe?
